Ready Check: Inside World of Warcraft Raiding with Gaming Researcher Ladan Cockshut

Every night, massive teams of battle-worn experts gather, organize, and battle through intense and complex challenges. Often they die. Sometimes they win. World of Warcraft is nothing if not massive and complex. While the world at large has a perception of video games as simplistic pastimes, raiders define an intense pursuit of excellence.

Although this is a long interview, Ladan has become one of my favorite conversation subjects. She's one of the few true experts on MMOs and communities within virtual, persistent worlds. Audio Enclosure

Interview with Maciej Ceglowski of Pinboard.in

Maciej Ceglowski is the founder of Pinboard.in, an "anti-social" bookmarking site. As the social web evolves, some trends mature past the initial commodified service value to become strong cottage industries. A for-pay service inspired by the original del.icio.us, Pinboard.in takes a holistic approach to personal data tracking. The service integrates smoothly with the contemporary web of indie apps, and excels at truly frictionless clickstream cacheing.

RSS is dead! Long live RSS!

This interview was recorded the week after Google announced the death of beloved feed parsing app, Google Reader. The headlines regarding Reader's demise have been predictably and wonderfully hyperbolic.

Elena Bulygina and Anton Tolchanov, two of the three co-founders of The Old Reader, help us make sense of a post-Google Reader world.

Ken Segall Keeps it Simple | Win the Room

Kelly Hadous

Recorded live at KoPoint

Ken Segall Keeps it Simple:  Ken shares how win your room with simplicity.

Bio From KenSegall.com:
My story is a simple one. I’m a writer who worked at ad agencies with high standards, then met a client with absurdly high standards: Steve Jobs. From ‘Think Different’ to iMac and beyond, I found that Steve’s love of simplicity was at the core of Apple’s every success…

Kelly: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work closely with Steve Jobs or name a product so brilliantly that it’s etched forever in the pages of history. Well I was, and that’s why I had to bring my dear friend Ken Segall on WTR radio.

Ken Segall worked closely with Steve Jobs at Apple. Ken is that guy we can thank for coming up with the name iMac, and the rest my friends is naming history. That cute little “i” became the foundation for naming all the other Apple products that followed.

We also chat about marketing ideas, and Ken says just “be yourself” I love it! How many times in a day do we worry and agonize about how we’re perceived, but if we just get out of our own way, then magic starts to happen!

Ken talks to moi at KoPoint, about his behind closed meetings with Steve Jobs and shares some awesome insights on his marketing strategies in Insanely Simple.

Finally, Scoopertino, Ken’s blog about all things sardonic in the unreal apple world is a hoot to say the least, and it always causes quite a stir not only for apple lovers, but the entire produce section.

I just adore Ken and I know you will too!

Share your comments, they’re always appreciated.

- Kelly and WTR team!

KoPoint Season Three | Beer Diplomacy, EP 113 – Mad Diplomacy

I had a blast recording this episode. After two full seasons (and leaning in to Season Three now), and 18 months of recording, KoPoint has really started to hit it’s stride (minus that really annoying slight background audio hum – I’ve been trying to dial out that machine ghost for ages…). Our quality programming is in large part due to great shows like Beer Diplomacy. Stuart has booked a ton of great guests for this season, and launching Season Three with Dick DeBartolo and Myq Kaplan is a great start!

Managing the Gray | Inauguration Inspiration

CC Chapman

Politics are the last thing that usually inspire me to record a podcast, but today that is exactly what made me fire up the microphone and hit record.

But, this isn’t a rant fueled political episode. Instead I wanted to encourage people to find the issues that they are passionate about and fight for them. It is our duty to be educated on what is going on around us and be vocal about anything we believe in.

I mentioned my recent post about the foreign aid and how it wasn’t until I learned more about it that I became vocal about it.

It is equally important also, to respect other’s beliefs and opinions and not pick a fight every time you see someone who doesn’t line up exactly like you do.

The show ends with my encouragement for you to check out all the great audio being published over at KoPoint [Thanks, CC!]. This show is just one of many different shows there and I’m proud to be part of such a progressive media network.

The Minecraft Book Podcast | About the Project

KoPoint

Part 1 of 3: In which co-authors Doc and Dan catch us up on the state of the project, and how the KoPoint Minecraft Project evolved to become The Minecraft Book.

Note: This episode was originally recorded as a Google+ video Hangout

About the Book:

The Minecraft Book is an accessible and fun 70-page guide for players of Minecraft. The Minecraft Book was written and edited by W. Doc Stodden and Dan Patterson, and will be available in mid-January from KoPoint. Howdy, and welcome to our Minecraft blog! As we prepare The Minecraft Book, we use this site to post book info & updates, as well as cool Minecraft-related links.

What is The Minecraft Book?

The Minecraft Book is a great entry-level resource for all players of the Mojang game Minecraft.

Who is this book for?

Though the book is written with new players in mind, it’s our hope that our guide can be a resource for all players.

Who are the authors?

The Minecraft Book was written and edited by fans of the game. Much of the prose was composed by Mr. W. Doc Stodden. Dan Patterson contributed to the prose, copy edits, and formatting. The book is published in conjunction with KoPoint. The authors can be reached by visiting our Ask page.

How can I purchase the book?

The Minecraft Book will soon be available through our own website, as well as through Amazon, Google Play, the Nook Store, and Apple’s iBooks.

Why should I pay you a buck for The Minecraft Book?

We think that a dollar is a very reasonable price to ask in exchange for a guide that will surely enhance both your skill and appreciation of this great game!

When will the book be released?

Soon! Probably late-January 2013. We’re putting the final touches on the prose. From there we edit, then format, then distribute.

Learn more about Minecraft.

The Murdoc Jones Show, EP 2 – Why is Travis Tritt Such an Asshole?

Murdoc Jones used to be somebody: a morning drive DJ on the biggest rocknroll radio station in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota! Now, he hosts a podcast.

This week, Murdoc is joined by radio cohort and X-Rock morning drive co-host Kevin Morgan. The two discuss what it’s like to oil up with rocknroll bands at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and explain exactly why Murdoc hates Travis Tritt.

Notes from MurdocJones.com:

Kevin and Murdoc swap concert industry stories from meeting artists, and record a post Mayan Apocalypse show. Help us figure out why Travis Tritt is the biggest asshole. Ever. And does Sully from Godsmack steal your energy when you’re in the room with him? Wicca or not – follow @murdocj

Isn’t Life A Moment? | Digital Flotsam

PW Fenton

I’ve returned to an older way of creating shows. When I first started doing them, I would just start putting something together. I would decide when it was nearing completion if it had any kind of unifying theme. Usually it did. That’s when I would add the intro and outro. The whole show would seem like it was more planned than it actually was. The idea of “themes” was so successful the cart slowly passed the horse, and it evolved into a process where I would first come up with a theme and then struggle to support it with content. That made it much more difficult, and was one of the things that slowed down the frequency of releases. So I’m going to try and do them the original way. Maybe it will improve the rate at which they get done.

Today’s show contains lotsa cool independent music, and even a bit of “old media” music that I used sparingly under the “fair use doctrine” as in illustrative example.

“Message In A Bottle” (snippet) by The Police
“Rocker In A Rocker” by Dr. Oakroot
“Two Sisters” by Fiction Plane
“What! Not Another Greasy Spoon” by Hank Marr
“Someone Is Crazy” by Jonathan Coulton
“Derek Malone” by 3 Blind Mice

…and of course, as always, thanks to 3 Blind Mice for the great theme music.

The photograph attached to this episode was taken by Susan Bonkowski. The picture shows her then 99 year old grandfather playing his mandolin on the patio. My story about “The Police” made me think of him. He was my grandfather-in-law.
